Ornate austerity in Mayfair

NO.4 CLIFFORD STREET – Here sits an elegant Georgian building, one of the oldest in the neighbourhood of Mayfair, London, a house dating from 1719 and originally conceived by the architect John Witt, and now the current home of Connolly, a clothing and leather goods boutique that made its debut in 1995, but closed temporarily in 2010 for a 5 year pause.

Today it’s opened once again, in this beautiful building whose architectural history has been put into the very capable hands of Paris-based design duo Patrick Gilles & Dorothée Boissier, whom we’ve mentioned here at TIG several times before.

Connolly’s founder, Isabel Ettedgui, offered Gilles & Boissier carte blanche to transform the new location into two floors of chic contemporary retail space and showroom, reserving the top floor for Ettedgui’s home. The boutique carries bespoke cashmere sweaters, leather bags, and a furnishings line by Gilles & Boissier themselves. The latter, brought along with them their Parisian sensibilities, encasing the walls in elegant boiserie and using their tried and true neutral palette and restraint, showcasing ornate austerity at its finest.
