MUSINGS NO.01 | AUGUST 19, 2019 – WE CAN NEVER GO BACK

Last week, had a strange dream about an old childhood friend; her name was Kathryn and she had golden hair and calm sea blue eyes―a perfect foil for my raven tresses and dark eyes. She would hand me long handwritten letters nearly every morning, even though we saw each other at school everyday. Every letter always ended with an inspirational quote, such as, “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” (George Eliot) We were best friends. Every summer, for three weeks, we would wile away our days at her family’s lake house, about a three and half hour (or so) drive up north, through tiny towns along winding country roads. We would spend the time talking for hours, daydreaming, going for long walks in the forest; reading or playing board games, swimming in the lake, going boating or water skiing, and ending each day with the sunset or roasting marshmallows by the fire. One of the last times I saw her was to meet her new boyfriend, Andrew, who was studying to become an accountant. I lost touch with her shortly after that, moving away to the city, and then later, around the world.

The dream filled me with an overwhelming desire to find out what had become of her. As it turns out, she would marry the accountant and have four children. She still drives up to the lake house (although I don’t know if it’s the same one we spent our childhood summers at, or if she and Andrew built a new one of their own). She works in marketing and has never left the small town we grew up in. I thought about contacting her, but then decided that it was best to let her remain as she does in my memory. She has become a part of the past, and everyone knows that we can never go back.
