This week’s Playlist. Enjoy. –P

Deep, sensual, hypnotic are some of the adjectives that best describe the Portico sound. The band originally formed in 2005 as Portico Quartet and attained critical success with a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2007. Since then, the band has undergone a series of lineup changes which has led them to their most recent incarnation, dropping the Quartet from their name and signing to the Ninja Tune label. Alt-J front man, Joe Newman, provides the vocals for “101” which surely must be one of 2015’s best tracks so far.

LA-based alternative hip hop artist, Open Mike Eagle, raps over a staccato beat on “Ziggy Starfish” from his latest EP, A Special Episode Of.

If you have been following along with the playlist, then you’ll know that we are big fans of last year’s Mercury Music Prize winners and Edinburgh’s own Young Fathers. “Rain or Shine” is the first single from their forthcoming album White Men Are Black Men Too, released April 7th. The track sounds like it it may have a sample of Metronomy’s “The Look”

Jack Garret is 23 year old British artist in the mold of Ed Sheeran in that he’s a one man band stage performer. Garret’s debut EP, Remnant, came out last summer and he has be gaining admirers from the likes of Rick Ruben and Zane Lowe. Here’s is the stripped down “The Love You’re Given”.

Calgary-based alt-rock outfit, Viet Cong, released their self-titled debut album in January. “Continental Shelf” has a sinister riff that almost sounds like it could have been plucked from the mid 90’s, but somehow feels contemporary. Expect big things from this band in 2015.
