When thinking of the South I always picture sunny landscapes, pink hours by the beach, dîners en plein air on the terrace. Last August I spent only a few days in the south and I didn’t get a chance to visit all the places I wanted to see so much. I wonder how Provence feels during autumn when the golden hours are a bit chillier. If you're planning on spending some cosy nights by the fire in the South of France this autumn, here are a few places that are full of beauty and magic...

« Simply one of the most iconic hotels on Pampelonne beach, it was one of Audrey Hepburn’s favorites back in the golden age of the French Riviera. Monica Damonte has modernized the hotel while remaining faithful to its sixties spirit, not succumbing to the temptation of large, flashy resorts. There are ten cabin-style bedrooms with rattan furniture, colored windows and floral vintage fabrics, while landscape gardener Madison Cox – known for the Majorelle gardens in Marrakech – has reinvented the gardens in a Provençal-style spirit with olive trees, canolas, and lavender. In an ode to the South of France way of life, the hotel encourages tennis matches, swimming, lunches, barefoot sandy walks, grilled langoustines, seasonal tomatoes, and pre-dinner drinks facing the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. » --Vogue Paris

« Just a 15-minute walk from the bustling Cours Mirabou in the heart of Aix, you’ll find the 22-room, ultra-luxe, terra cotta dream that is Villa Gallici. The original 18th-century palazzo-inspired building has been lovingly restored by the Italian Baglioni Hotels group and is also part of the Relais & Châteaux consortium, so every Mediterranean touch feels just right — from the extremely friendly and knowledgeable concierges (none of my bizarre questions about faience shopping proved too much for them) to the refined Provençal cuisine served on the restaurant’s atmospheric terrace. Villa Gallici is the perfect oasis from which to explore neighboring Romanesque churches, Mont Sainte-Victoire (Cézanne’s inspiration), and some of the most vibrant outdoor markets in the south of France. »

On the mountain of Canigou lays a beautiful hotel, a thermal spa resort: “Built in 1860 on the ruins of an 11th-century hillfort, this ivy-draped folly showcases an eclectic riot of decorative styles and curiosities – all carefully curated by the exceedingly elegant and well-travelled lady of the house, Mademoiselle Barthélémy. Her father bought and developed the thermal resort after WWII and the matriarchal pride and passion Mademoiselle invests in her maison is exceptional.” --The Telegraph

« Hidden behind the main, modern building of Chateau Minuty sits this elegant Bastide with a hydrangeas and palm tree lined entrance, beautiful stone and a black and white marble floor. The sun poured out from behind the clouds as we approached, casting golden light which highlighted the elegance of this incredible property. Complete with a modern, crisp swimming pool which sits in front of rows and rows of vines, this old-world meets modern amenity home is just a dream. » --Lucy Cuneo

« The Château de Berne is announced by cypress trees at the bottom of a driveway that leads through the estate’s 500 hectares of unspoilt nature. Over the past three centuries, its cellars have delivered Provençal wines full of character and crisp rosés. Designed in a ‘country chic’ style, the rooms with their unique décor offer magnificent views of the garden, vineyards and forest. In the restaurants, the colourful cuisine celebrates the flavours of Provence. » --Relais & Chateaux
