Tyler, The Creator – Boredom

Tyler, the Creator staves off loneliness and isolation in his new song “Boredom” a track off the Odd Future rapper’s upcoming LP ‘Flower Boy’

Tyler, the Creator staves off loneliness and isolation in his new song “Boredom,” a track off his Odd Future rapper’s upcoming LP Flower Boy.

“I been starting to feel like I don’t know anyone / So now I’m staring at my ceiling with no idea where I’m going,” Tyler says on the laid back cut. “I’ve been in the fucking room so long / My eyes are turning to drywall.”

“Boredom” features vocal contributions from Rex Orange County, Anna of the North and Corinne Bailey Rae, as well as guitar work from Austin Feinstein, who previously appeared in the same capacity on Frank Ocean’s Blonde.

The track follows previous Flower Boy offerings “Who Dat Boy?” featuring A$AP Rocky and “911 / Mr. Lonely” with Frank Ocean. Tyler, the Creator’s follow-up to 2015’s Cherry Bomb is due out July 21st.

The sound of the world opening up wide, one Uber ride and lovelorn text at a time. “I don’t want to fall in love off of subtweets,” Khalid sings in his breakthrough, “Location,” before begging for a personal connection to make the digital flesh. At 19, Khalid is one of the the most original voices in both R&B and pop, creating a late-night music full of warmth and flickering light. In songs like “Young Dumb and Broke” and “8Teen,” he skips trap fantasies to talk about living with your parents and the ups and downs of millennial romance, where every love and loss is stored on a phone for future reference.

The Mountain Goats – We Do It Different on the West Coast

Nobody is more adept at chronicling the why, wherefores, follies and foibles of the subcultural weirdo than offbeat auteur John Darnielle, whose wry, reflective ditties have the unerring ability to bear wiseacre titles like ‘Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back To Leeds’ whilst remaining affecting, intriguing, and something very much beyond a hipster in-joke. Made entirely without guitars, ‘Goths’ as one might expect deals largely with the black-clad and the sullen of disposition, but with a lightness of touch matched by ornate arrangements and laid-back melancholia at its disposal, it’s a first-rate salvo from a uniquely perceptive and potent songwriter.

Bjørn Torske & Prins Thomas – On U

Bjørn Torskeand Prins Thomas have made an album called Square One, which is coming out through Smalltown Supersoundin July. The pair are both key Norwegian electronic music artists who’ve known each other for more than two decades, but this is the first time one of their collaborations has seen the light of day. “We had some occasional get-togethers in my flat back in 1997, where we recorded Thomas playing bass on some sketches I had done,” Torske told RA. “I still have it on DAT, but the recordings were distorted and not fit for use.”

Torske says the original plan was for him to remix Prins Thomas’s album, Principe Del Norte. “I suggested that we should do this together in a studio in Oslo,” he adds. “During a dinner we had the day before the session was about to start, Joakim at Smalltown Supersound said he had discussed with Thomas the possibility of us making some original music instead. He thought it was a unique opportunity to have us both together in the studio. So we agreed to this, and went in with no plan and just recorded by pure fancy.”

The album was recorded in a studio in Oslo, called Taakeheimen, in the spring of 2015. A year later, the edited tracks were mixed at another Oslo studio, Malabar, and finally, Torske explains, “we edited our live mix takes into the tracks that now are included on the album.” Square One will see release on double-vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Grandaddy – Brush with the Wild

Today, Grandaddy shares the video for “Brush With The Wild,” a track from their recent album Last Place, which was released this Spring on 30th Century Records/Columbia Records. The video stars actor and massive fan of the band, Jonah Ray (Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Nerdist Podcast, The Meltdown), and was directed by Aaron Beckum. Watch “Brush With The Wild” HERE.

NPR Music premiered “Brush With The Wild” this morning, noting that with the new video, “Grandaddy finds humor in grief.” The band’s Jason Lytle adds, “I really love the way the video turned out. So funny, and scrappy. And sad, and actually kind of hopeless…but in a hopeful way.”

In a conversation with NPR, Lytle says, “I had to be convinced it was okay to tell someone that I loved them or to just let my guard down. And then, once I did, it was almost like this wild, primal thing. But it only comes in little flashes. It’s like a fish swimming through the river and every now and then it’ll turn and the light will flash off its skin and you get a glimpse of it, then it’s gone. Lightning is like that. But you get to experience it very briefly. [So] I was thinking how sad and bummed out I was finding the relationship being done [but] at least I got to experience that. I got to brush up against it.”
