Notes from the Weekend & a Few Lovely Links

TO SAY THAT IT WAS an eventful weekend would be a massive understatement, for it was a wild weekend of fire an fireworks, crowds and cava. Last night was the ending of the city’s famous Fallas festival, a literal festival of fire which began on the 15th of March, creating ephemeral street art museums of neighbourhoods in the city, as well as surrounding towns and villages. This street art, or ninots (puppets), are actually elaborate firecracker-filled cardboard and paper-mâché artistic creations meant to be burned completely to the ground on the final night, the 19th of March, as tribute to Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, and in celebration of spring. The festival was added to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity list in 2016. P had mentioned that he read somewhere that over a million tourists came to the city over the weekend alone, and that there were actually some 700 of these ninots to be burned, which means the city was extravagantly set alight with flames and fireworks for nearly a week. Happy First Day of Spring! They certainly know how to usher in a new season here, with all the of the bad thought to be burned away, making room for new things to arise from the ashes.

This week’s links include gingham and French girl hair and A Sophisticated Paris Pied-À-Terre; lacy tops and a Weekend in Florence and much, much more …
