It is advisable to purchase both a small and large rolling piece—having both will serve you well for a variety of trips. Many prefer standard rolling luggage, with a firm shape in order to keep contents better protected.

Surprisingly, a firm rectangular shape will allow you to fit more than a soft shape would. However, a soft or firm shape for a carry-on shoulder bag is fine, based on preference.

Take a look first at the fabric of the luggage. While hard-sided rolling pieces might be arguably sturdier, they are also considerably heavier.

sarah5

If you prefer something lighter, select a fabric piece of either nylon or ballistic nylon over polyester. Keep in mind that besides size, there are also weight restrictions when traveling. Look for a tight, dense weave, and if the label goes into detail, high-denier [referring to the thickness of the fabric].

As for a carry-on, other such additional bags, and accessories, a nylon or leather/eco-equivalent is most often the best option for longevity. Leather as the main material on a rolling piece would add unnecessary weight, and is always a concern when wet, but lovely for a carry-on shoulder bag.

Be sure to take a close look at the zippers. Overall, zippers will require possibly more repairs than any other aspect of your luggage. A chain zipper, over a coil zipper will fair better, as they are relatively stronger and more resistant to dirt. To finish, do not forget to purchase quality locks for your luggage as well.

Quality wheels on a rolling piece that are larger and made of rubber will allow you to move faster and easier. Also, if they are recessed at all, they are less likely to be damaged. The bottom of your piece should be strong and may have additional protective pieces added to the corners and the bottom to ensure longevity.

You may prefer a bag without exterior compartments for a simple, elegant look, or may like the convenience of a few exterior compartments. Keep in mind, that while it might seem like exterior pockets will add storage possibilities, they also increase the overall size of the piece once packed.

Adding small necessities to a carry-on bag, rather than to the exterior of a rolling piece, if it can be helped, is best.

tma-5

Before purchasing, be sure to open the bag and take a look at the interior. A water resistant, easy to clean interior is always a great idea, and one with extras such as garment bags, is a bonus.

Lastly, be sure to test the handle on your rolling piece. Does it feel sturdy? Try walking around with the piece and be certain that the length of the handle is comfortable and fits well to your height.

Often luggage is carried for quite a length of time, and we must always consider our backs and the strain that an ill-fitting bag may cause.

tma-8

Test also that the mechanisms and that the handle retracts and can be used with ease. Your carry-on (and possibly on the side of your rolling piece as well) should have sturdy handles with strong seams and fasteners.
