{a weekend away: vieux-montréal}

by

. . . recently whisked away to the beautiful city of montréal, a captivating place overflowing with arts & culture and european charm, and for a few days, was lost in the utter romance of cobblestone streets and leisurely dinners, wonderfully ornate architecture and macarons in quaint cafés . . .

freshly baked & still-warm bagels from st-viateur

croissants & café au lait at olive et gourmando

view from the city’s namesake, le mont royal

the beautiful shop, moutarde

insanely delicious salted caramel truffles & chocolate à boire avec épices with homemade marshmallows at les chocolats de chloé

“Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. Travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.”

{other lovely places:}
* by the fire at hôtel st-paul
* basilique notre-dame
* parc mont-royal
* cocktails at the hôtel le st-james
* grand bibliothèque de montréal
* dinner at au pied de cochon

  • Stunning, stunning post about my home town! I had a coffee at Olive and Gourmando just this morning. Thank you for sharing!!

  • lovely, love post!

  • Very beautiful pictures, although I have to say I was rather disappointed by Montreal. I’m sure my expectations were over-hyped by the term “Paris of North America,” and I didn’t think it lived up to that description. At all.

  • Lovely photos. Even though I live in Montreal, I rarely ever visit downtown or the old part.

  • This is stunning! the photos are beautiful and really make me want to go to Montreal. Love this blog!

  • Absolutely stunning shots! It makes me want to go there…NOW! :)

  • wonderful post! I’ve been dying to get out of the states for a quick little vacation. I’ve been to montreal when I was in elementary school, but would love to go back. I’m going to try really hard to get there… and I must go to this lake with the view!

  • Amazing shots!!! Wish I was there!!

  • Great snaps, the arcitechture looks European, and the bagels look delicious!

  • Beautiful pics from your holiday! I’m infatuated with that architectural chandelier and bedroom it’s in!

  • Wow, that architecture, the city, and the chandelier! Loove. Your blog has such beautiful photos daily, I totally look forward to seeing what you will post next! :)

  • rachel – not weird at all, but quite a wonderful way to put it and thank you :)

    caroline – definitely enjoyed the visit, although would love to visit in the summertime; the louboutins were spotted in a fun little boutique in downtown montréal – they had two walls of just louboutins! — the name escapes me at the moment, but will let you know as soon as i find out

    el – had a wonderful time – thank you!

  • xoxoC – two hours sounds wonderfully close — you must go more often :) + yes, have been to québec city before and absolutely adore it! thank you for the other recommendations as well

    redbrickbuilding – the bagels are delicious — heard they’ve been shipped all over the world – should look into having some sent over, although there’s nothing like having them fresh from the oven with light-as-air cream cheese

    hello everyone! such lovely, lovely comments – thanks so much and so happy you like the photos – will definitely return to montréal again, but in the summertime — was certainly a wonderful + romantic place to visit…

    hope you’re having a fantastic week,
    xo

    Wonderful, beautiful pictures! Looks and sounds like you had a magnificent, delicious and very pretty weekend.

  • josephine — definitely — and also, that travel takes the everyday things we take for granted, and these very things, while traveling, become more beautiful and meaningful, as if they were art…

  • love that quote! i never thought to equate travel and literature, but it’s true that good writing can be a very transportive experience.

  • Oh, I am so jealous. And I love that quote. I always wonder what visitors see in my town that I don’t notice because I live here. And vice-versa when I go somewhere else.

  • Glad you liked Montreal, although I don’t visit downtown Montreal as often as I’d like you truly captured the vibe in your photos. Very beautiful!

  • I absolutely love visiting Montreal (HATE driving there :p). I’m from Aylmer (across the river from Ottawa and about 2 hours from Montreal)yet I’ve only been to Montreal twice!!! If you want beauty and old-world, European French charm, you MUST visit Québec City. :) And while you’re at it, Kingston (Canada’s first capital city) is a great place to go, full of culture, arts and more restaurants per square capita than any other city in Canada :) Alright, I’ve done my duty of promoting my Country for the day!! :p Glad you had a great time on your trip!! xo

  • Such pretty shots! I’ve been to Montreal 2x and would love to go again. It’s got that European feel but w/o the travel!
