{inspiration: back to black}

. . . had all but abandoned black {in the home, but not the closet} long ago, believing it to be a little overwhelming and sombre for bright and sunny rooms -- and yet -- have recently become enchanted by its bold elegance and dramatic charm . . .

Oh I just love that shoe cabinet! Every girl should be able to display her shoes that way. Such a simple but happy thing!

I don't find black the LEAST bit depressing. I find it comforting and calm and sturdy and strong. My home decor is Black and Wood. It is Timeless. It doesn't say "80's Teal" or "70's Avacado". The trim here is black...the cabinets are black...the beds are black....and I'm a redhead and I fit right in!

I love all the black especially the doors in pic. 6 and that last little cabinet is lovely.

I really like how the sleek black of the dresser is juxtaposed with the girly floral wallpaper behind it. Very unexpected.

I've been fixated on black at the moment too! I have been thinking of painting my entrance hall black - and just having a gold framed mirror as an accent.

I decorate with black. It all started with a vintage black chair and I built my home around it. Love it!

Fabulous post! I think that black is the new white and we'll be seeing it a lot in the next few years - esp in photography styles in fashion and still life as well:-)

I have to laugh Ive been having a black and white morning this morning - having been wandering through Anne Fontaine

It takes a confident designer to use black in home decor and your pictures are great inspiration! We used black vases in our new Fall/Winter 2009 collection and people are loving the designs... black is back!

Lovely post- I especially enjoy the shoe "rack" cabinet.

the black makes the space look surprisingly less cluttered. I love how they used black to pain the inside of the cabinets. Genius!!

I like the way a dark floor or a dark wall grounds a pale white room. Jenna Lyons (J.Crew) makes great use of black in her home.

Great post! I love black - especially when it's a beautiful high gloss black painted door or as a piece of furniture or other accent. I've been saving blog posts on the subject for future project inspirations. Will save this one, too!

I love how this look is both edgy and whimsical - I wear a lot of black but rarely think to decorate with it, but it works so well!

So true! Until more recently, I couldn't have even imagined using black in my house but now I can't get enough. Dark walls are driving me crazy right now. In a good way.

Black normally scares me with how overpowering it can be, but these images totally change my mind. Those black doors are fab & who can resist a cabinet of shoes?

yes, it's so true... i've tended to shy away from black, but it is creeping back into design -- with a vengeance. and it looks great when well done. i love the images you chose; sometimes it can be a little too stark but these all are great. thanks for sharing!

When done right, I absolutely love black as a design element. Black walls=awesome. Black leather couch=not so awesome. That black dresser at bottom is exquisite...would love that as the centerpiece in my one-day walk-in closet. It's going to make Carrie Bradshaw's look like a crawl space. Le sigh...

I have been praising the song of black for quite some time. I am dying to do my next kitchen with antiqued black cabinets.

I am thrilled to see someone else sees the beauty in black. Love, love love the dark walls!
