That is, of course, until I happened upon this beautiful ancien hôtel particulier, a home overflowing with French style in the English countryside, where everything feels comfortable and inviting, and infused with warmth and a wonderful mix of French glamour and English country charm . . .

I think the trick is to pair the wood with "harder" or "colder" elements. The chandelier does that nicely for me. But then I've alwasy liked the feeling of being on deck.
Oh yes, it's beautiful. It's a warm, 'welcome home' wood though and with a few modern accents, it keeps it in fashion. A-M xx

We're thinking along the same lines: the chandeliers and other sophisticated touches change the appearance of the wood, balancing out its rustic qualities with a sense of refinement.

I just love this house! I normally don't like wood either but this is just perfectly done. I love that chandelier -they can be so tricky as most look either cheap, tacky or just over-done but that one is beautiful.
I especially love the green room in the background, w/ the green draperies. Very nice!

dark woods and in-t-e-n-s-ey dark and dreary wall papers are what greeted us with our french renovation project -a.k.a delapidated home in the wine growing town of southern France-not the Cote Est,from the reference sited- ok, our wood perked right up with ,as you share, the sparkles of chandeliers and french paints-carefully selected to focus on the ochre and sienna colors of the earth!
So basically, I am blabbing about how on a budget if nearly zero,wood can come alive ! You have a great site and ever so glamourous-
